The Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute equips LGBT leaders for success.  Through its training and professional development programs, each year the Leadership Institute assists hundreds of individuals who go on to influential careers in politics, government, business and advocacy.  Founded in 1993, the Leadership Institute is a tax-exempt educational and research organization.

In 1994, GLLI merged with the International Network of Lesbian and Gay Officials.  The organization became the home of the annual conference now known as the International Gay & Lesbian Leadership Conference.  2008 marks the 24th year of the conference.

The first gathering of LGBT elected officials took place in 1985 with about a dozen individuals gathering to informally discuss their work. More than two decades later, that loose network of leaders has evolved into the International Gay and Lesbian Leadership Conference. Last year’s conference in Las Vegas drew more than 300 registrants and a diverse program of events including speeches from Reps. Tammy Baldwin and Barney Frank.

The Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute has trained hundreds of openly LGBT candidates and campaign workers how to build winning campaigns. While the conference is taking place, future political candidates and campaign staff will learn the secrets of running a successful campaign by participating in a four-day, intensive simulation.
