Dallas Mayoral Candidate Could Make History

Thu, Mar 22nd 2007, 11:50
Dallas City Councilman Ed Oakley is off and running in what could be an historic quest. If elected, the Victory endorsee could become the first openly gay mayor of one of the ten largest U.S. cities. ““Ed embodies the courage and commitment we all want in our public officials, and that shows in the strong support he is getting from both Republicans and Democrats. It’s an enormous achievement that an openly gay man is a serious contender to be elected mayor in one of America's 10 biggest cities,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund. The race for mayor of the Big D has already drawn some 20 contenders, but Oakley, a thrice-elected city councilman, is running strong near the top of the pack. Two contenders will likely survive the May 12 nonpartisan primary and go to a runoff election in early June.
